Better Together Summer

When we stand together, real change becomes possible.

We are better together. And we’re better together as Canadians. The little lawn signs created by the Strathcona Diversity Committee sum it up perfectly: “Let’s all belong.” When we get to know our neighbours, the differences melt away and the similarities shine though. We can lean on each other when we are connected.

As NDP Leader, MLA Naheed Nenshi put it, “The best way to understand what Albertans need is to talk to them—at their doors, in town halls, in community.” And we’re spending our summer listening. Join me at community events, socials, forums and even on your doorsteps and let me know what a strong future for Canada looks like for you this Better Together Summer.

From Crowsnest Pass to Fort McMurray — we’re trucking across Alberta. Whether it’s a kitchen table chat, my tent at the Highland Gathering, or a booth at a local farmers’ market, NDP MLAs want to hear your stories. What’s working? What’s not? What do you dream about building for future generations?

Ask your questions. Share your ideas. Be hopeful again—not because everything’s perfect, but because hope is a force multiplier. When we stand together, real change becomes possible. When we choose hope and connection to other people, Canada is, and always will be, Better Together.

Lately, it feels like there are forces that don’t want neighbours to get to know each other. There’s a growing far-right movement in Alberta and across North America that thrives on division and misinformation. That movement benefits when we feel angry, isolated, or hopeless. That movement pushes ideas like separatism, step-by-step, ditching the Canada Pension Plan, scrapping the RCMP, and lowering the bar for referendums—not to help you, but to fracture trust in each other and in our shared future as Canadians. It’s calculated, monetized, and dangerous. When we stop talking to each other, it becomes easier for fear and falsehoods to take over. That’s why showing up—and really listening—matters more than ever.

Most of the time, politics and the news feel heavy. Summer gatherings are part of the solution to counter those feelings. Join us at a Better Together event. We have six dates and locations announced already. Among them, I’m hosting a town hall meeting on Thursday, September 11 at the log cabin in Sherwood Park.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on separatism, the RCMP, the CPP, public health care, supports for students, affordability, jobs, and so much more. These aren’t just headlines, they’re kitchen table issues. Should Alberta leave the Canada Pension Plan? What happens if we replace the RCMP with a new provincial force? How are families coping with rising rent, grocery bills, and school fees? Are job opportunities keeping up with our kids’ ambitions?

Summer chats give us a pulse check on how Albertans are really doing—and your lived experience is the best compass we’ve got to guide better decisions.
